Wigan's Ting Tings and Verve up for top awards

Wigan bands The Ting Tings and The Verve are among the acts up for gongs at this year's Brit Awards.

At the nomination show held in London, it was announced that The Ting Tings, fronted by Lowton-born singer Katie White, are in the running for the Best British Album and Best British Breakthrough Act honors.

The Verve have been nominated for the Best British Live Act award. The Ting Tings, who released debut LP We Started Nothing last May, enjoyed phenomenal success throughout 2008.

The indie pop duo of singer and guitarist Katie and drummer Jules De Martino topped the album and singles chart with "That's Not My Name," and sold out a UK tour.

The Ting Tings are up against Coldplay, Duffy, Elbow and Radiohead for the Best British Album award at the Brits. Adele, Duffy, The Last Shadow Puppets and Scouting For Girls compete in Best British Breakthrough Act category. The Verve reformed in 2007 and released Forth in 2008.

They are joined in the Best British Live Act category by Coldplay, Elbow, Iron Maiden and Scouting For Girls. The awards are on February 18.
